As we are heading into February, I can't help but think I'm missing the boat! So many great tidbits of advice, so many great resources and an abundance of talented people we can all benefit from...this is the year of sharing! An intention for the New Year...pass along all the great ideas and inspirations I'm lucky enough to be a recipient of!
Since 2011 began...

We attended the gift show in downtown LA...we took my mom ~what a great experience for her, she's never attended anything quite like it. With the hopes of finding new artist, walking aisles and aisles to do so ~ I believe we accomplished our mission. I can't wait for the new arrivals!

We had a wonderful artist reception featuring the jewelry of Gloria Prins and Lynne Carmody...the selection is awesome, they left their pieces for us to enjoy! In addition to the reception, we celebrated our 1 year anniversary!!!

Artist/Musician Jean Sudbury played her Mandolin then transitioned over to her Violin ~ she was the opening....her music was beautiful and peaceful!

Following was Michelle Beauchesne playing her Cello along with her friend Jeff playing his Violin...they were a wonderful duo. The setting was perfect in the back patio...we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day and evening! A great time to reflect, make some positive changes and set those resolutions! I hope you don't get discouraged if your not able to keep them all...sometimes life happens! God only knows we always have the best intentions.
Here at the nest we have made quite a few resolutions for 2011. I am sooo excited to share.
Reflecting back on 2010...the year has been so eventful, eyeopening, inspiring, fulfilling and just wonderful. Considering our poor economy, the struggles of so many people and our time of uncertainty...truly, all our customers and vendors were so complimentary, positive, friendly and patient. It was a joy to come to work...so thank you for a great first year.
Stay tuned as we are almost ready to launch our new website with online shopping. Thanks to John Culpepper, our website designer (whom I recommend highly!) is helping us out in this arena. We are combining all kinds of technological terms...I hope you find it to be very user friendly and beautiful.
Our continuous efforts of bettering the shop...we have some really great vendors and beautiful merchandise, try to stop in if you can. We will be receiving new books in shortly and new merchandise is starting to flow in again.
We are also just about ready to launch our own "belle's nest" product line...it's small, but it's a beginning.
We are very excited about the year ahead and will keep you updated on all that's new...join our mailing list for monthly updates.

Almost Christmas

Christmas is almost here...
A few days left before we celebrate! There is so much to write about...I can't wait to recap the year we have had, reflect on the positives and post pictures of how we evolved. Our tenth month in business...thank goodness, it's been great! I wish I could stay to write, but it's busy at the store...so I'm off to work. I'll write soon!

Something New from Zazu!

Zazu, one of our favorite artist just brought in her new repurposed stuffies. Zazu's color combination's and textures make the animals so charming and adorable, they bring me back to when I was a kid...I want to take one home! My daughter enjoys them just as much as I do ~ selfishly, I'm purchasing them for the both of us to share... how many can we possibly own???
Zazu is working on making the "Nutcracker" dolls, some gorgeous advent calendars and so much more...please come check out her work on November 20 for our artist trunk show or visit her animals daily at the Nest!

Halloween

Halloween in Sierra Madre is a pretty big deal! I've lived here for 7 years and never quite realized the "event" it's become and probably always has been. My kids nor I have ever appreciated the extent of activities our town has to offer until now...it's never too late:) Our first Halloween at the shop...what an experience! The week began with the painting of our front window for a window contest, lots of business' participated...my daughter and her best friends created our window! The week ended with a Friday afternoon of trick or treating and a parade. Gloria had a marvelous idea of making a haunted house on the side of the shop...the concept was great but didn't turn out quite as we expected...actually, it was somewhat chaotic... so busy, we didn't have time to take photos (ugh!) Hundreds of kids come through trick or treating, they had a blast! It was really cool to see such a community atmosphere and everyone just having plain ole FUN. We'll be ready for the crowds next year!

Almost November!

Wow, how this year has flown by....Belle's Nest has survived several amazing events! The tragedy is we don't have photos! We were so busy, somewhat overwhelmed and having such a good time, nobody took pictures...ugh!
We've been through a taste of Sierra Madre, what a great event and wonderful cause... The Wine and Jazz walk...WOW! It was a beautiful night, we served Bodega Wine from San Antonio Winery, our food was catered by A&B Catering (delicious!) and the amount of people and supporters was amazing. It was a great time, we are so looking forward to it again next year. If you didn't get to participate, I highly recommend it...there was music in the streets, most of the business' served great wines, and were paired with wonderful restaurants...just a really lovely evening.

Our Dia de los Muertos trunk show was great...you still have time to view the work of Rachel Adams...so eclectic and fun! I just love this holiday and form of art!

Today we had a kids craft class...truly a craft. The class was taught by Elyse Paek. She made Paper Mache pumpkin bowls with the kids...I forgot how much fun paper mache is...we suggested an adult class. The weather outside lent itself to a great fall day putting us in the Halloween spirit. Scroll down as Elyse will continue with fun, hands on craft projects for the kids.
If that wasn't enough...please join us for our very first annual "Belle's Nest Artist Closet Sale" A few of us are getting together to sell our fabrics, notions, clay tools, paper, jewelry supplies, beads, etc...you name it, we may have it! In this class you will learn to remove your chair seat along with the fabric and padding.
You will add fresh foam, cotton and a new layer of fabric and reattach it to your chair.
A simple procedure that seems daunting at first but once you get started, you will feel

1 chair - simple w/a seat pad is best.
1 yard fabric (fabric will also be available for sale)
**this will cover at least 4 chairs even though you will cover only one in this class

Involves blowing up a balloon, orange crepe paper (pumpkin skin), glue and lots of fun! Jack-o-lantern features can be scary or funny!!! Once they are done, we wait for a week for them to dry, be sealed then picked up. You will be left with a lovely candy bowl to reuse for years to come.

Getting to Know the Artist

ARtiSt Interview with LoRi KooP...

Tell me a little bit about yourself? Hmmmm. I'm 48, live in Sierra Madre, love creating and living fully. I spend a LOT of time in the intangible and imaginative space of my mind. It's definitely "home".

What do you make and what is the process? I am a fine artist using clay/ceramics to explore living and myself.

What inspires you to create? The endless possibilities... the "what if?s" and the happy accidents.

How do you see your craft evolving over the next year or two? Ceramics has been very much the same for centuries. That's the beauty of the medium. To push it tho, I and a handful of peers manipulate the surface by pressing into it with various interesting, texture making objects. (hint: everything pressed into clay leaves a mark. discovery is the next best thing...no, the BEST thing!)

What is your favorite aspect of being an artist? I love the play. The opportunity to be a curious kid and the process of questioning, searching and uncovering the conversation. Could be the shape. Could be the little pattern that formed "right there". It's random, and it's beautiful! Yes, like a little surprise, a present, in each experience. It's also a spiritual lifeline.

What do you enjoy doing when your not creating? I LOVE learning. So, if I'm not with clay, I search the internet, take classes, visit with friends. People fascinate me.

Are there any tips you would like to share for someone who wants to turn their "hobby" into a business? DO IT! If you have the urge, follow it. And whether "it works" or it doesn't, you have succeeded in giving it life. And it will always lead to the next step. Frankly I'm learning it's about the path, the journey of standing up to the fear. And becoming your whole, authentic self.

Any tips or suggestions on marketing yourself? Be yourself. Put yourself before the people who love your work. Teach them something they can apply to their life...a lesson learned, a process discovered, a trip taken. Everyone loves a good story and tell it in your voice. It's possible to have terrific and lose internet friends and buyers.

Anything you would like to share of interest? My latest lesson...when you think "oh, that's the way it's always been", and you desperately want it to be different. It CAN be. You just may need to get help to accomplish it. Hire a professional or enlist a friend. There is a never ending supply of hope.

Fun at the Flea Market!

Last week we had the chance to check out the new flea market at Dodger Stadium. The kids came along hoping to find their own treasures...
It was such a cool feeling driving into the enormous parking lot of Dodger Stadium without the intention of going to a game.
Freely driving around, we found the tents!
Parking was free, $7 to get in, our kids passed without paying so all was good!
For some reason hunger sets in when you arrive at a flea market or amusement park...so after a couple aisles, we looked for food.
A great selection of food trucks...they are so popular now! These trucks are gourmet restaurants on wheels...nothing like the old roach coach...the view from up top was spectacular.

We had a great time:) It was not very crowded, vendor selection was somewhat slim and the vintage section was only a couple of aisles wide...but overall, we found some cool stuff, ate good food and really enjoyed ourselves.
Hopefully the flea market will catch on...we will continue to support!

Six Month Anniversary!

It is so hard to believe Belles Nest is in it's sixth month of business! We just had Chris' art exhibit...we think his work is very cool. A good time was had by all and what a wonderful response he received. It was a beautiful night and the back patio was the perfect setting. At the conception of Belle's Nest, featuring an artist and having the receptions every month was something we really wanted to do. This was merely to give an aspiring artist or seasoned artist exposure and at the same time make for a nice evening to relax, socialize and as always...inspire, be inspired and talk "art."

As we continue to settle in, our minds never sleep! With the holidays quickly approaching, new merchandise is slowly coming in from many of our marvelous crafter's. New cards from Erin Sloan just arrived, beautiful pottery from Lori Koop... her signature words of inspiration! Great new tiles from Ramona Paloma and cool prints by Anna See are just a few items to come look at.
If there is something you want us to carry, please let us know ~ we will do our best to find it for you.
Furniture pieces are finally for sale...they will be posted on flicker soon if you can't make it in.
Custom work is also being offered by us and many vendors! If you are looking for gifts for your clients, corporate gifts, party favors, bridal party gifts, etc....please consider us ~ we can create something very special for you.

Painting is highly therapeutic for me. My subjects gravitate towards things I enjoy, interesting compositions, or things that I think are amusing. I have a tendency to lean towards food and animal portraits. I'm not trying to paint subjects that will necessarily sell or help me gain popularity. I've found that by painting with an honest agenda, my artwork has a way of organically finding its own audience.

Selling monsters and one of a kind gifts for kids...they create a very special gift!

Summer has certainly arrived! The heat is pretty intense so we've been spending much time inside rather than the patio moving and re merchandising ...no surprise! The never ending changing of the shop ~ at times we laugh at ourselves in exhaustion, but in the end the shop looks pretty fresh and we're happy!

Thursday we had another workshop for kids...it was a nice turnout and again, the kids are so creative! They seemed to enjoy themselves and made mosaic pots and planted succulents. Most of the project started off as gifts for others, but in the end, most of the kids didn't think they were going to be able to part with their new mosaic.

A new introduction to Belle's Nest...books! This is something we wanted to carry from the beginning.We do offer a selection of used books relating to arts, crafts, garden, cooking and just some plain old, funky cool books. Some books donated by friends, some from our homes and some found at second hand shops. We love mixing old with new, so we decided to bring in a selection of new books as well...all relating to topics we love such as the arts, crafts, garden, and organic lifestyle. You will find a couple great books for kids relating to these very topics. We will be adding to our book selection continuously ~

I feel like I haven't posted in so long and maybe it's because I haven't! One day it's June 1 and now we are at the end of the month....I don't know where the time has gone. With school getting out, computers crashing and vacations in the midst...everyone is busy!
We are so blessed to have new artisans bring in their treasures...welcome "ramona paloma"
Two wonderful women who have created a special series of tiles. You can tell their heart and soul are engraved in the tiles...they are incredibly sweet, unique and beautiful(the tiles and the artist) Can you tell we are excited!
New hats just arrived from San Diego Hat Co....they are perfect for our small town. Everyone walks, works in their yards and attends outdoor events. The hats are UV50...I never knew hats contained UV!
Tyn Atol just brought in adorable garden markers for your herbs, vegetables and inspirations...made of vintage silverware, she has created something very functional and incredibly sweet.
Tyn is doing our July window display...I'll make sure to take photos and share, also look for the future postings of her workshops she will be teaching at the Nest.
So much is going on and new things are arriving weekly, I will do my best to keep you updated.

I love how something so small can make one's mind run wild with ideas...so much so, that you can't wait to get home and start creating!

A customer came in today and noticed a wire garland we made from vintage buttons...purely decorative. This got her mind going and creative thoughts flowing...

A rich soup made from freshly roasted tomatoes, red bell peppers, onion, garlic and mild Serrano chilis, which are pureed and then combined with freshly made chicken stock. This hearty soup is filled with chicken breast, roasted corn and herbs, then topped with freshly made tortilla strips, cheese, avocado, sour cream, cilantro and a sprig of epazote. Truly a meal in a bowl.

In Gayle We Trust is the web show that is being filmed at Belles Nest. It's amazing to see the amount of people it takes to put on a production...this is just a two day shoot, and by the looks of things, one would say it's a big movie! This is great for our small town and for the store I hope! Parking was tough, the sidewalks were crowded with the crew, so opted not to stop...but I want to post some pictures, hopefully on Monday!

How blessed we are to have these amazing flowers...the colors, fragrance and textures are spectacular...I wish you could all experience them close up! Our "nest gardener" Brenda brought these gorgeous flowers to share and to brighten an already beautiful window display done by Tyn Atol and Kari Atol. The "April Showers" window already has received such great feedback...now these flowers just add the excitement for spring. Truly, our thanks and appreciation for all the work others do to make the store look great.

The Beauty of Spring!

Grow your own vegetables…this past year I started a vegetable garden…it has been long in coming. I’ve been wanting to do this for the past 12 years and finally got to it over spring of 2009(that sounds so long ago!)

For so many years, I would imagine this glorious setting ~ my yard would become this lush area giving me the feeling I was in the county somewhere growing my vegetables and picking my flowers….
On the contrary, it was nothing like that! I do love where I live, but my yard does not come even close to a country setting….i’m still waiting for grass!

Needless to say, I did plant my garden…with the help of my wonderful DAD. My kids did not partake in the process as I had once invisioned but atleast they do know it exists!
I need to share of photo of my dad gardening as he has been a HUGE inspiration for us in all aspects of our lives!

Since doing this, the excitement to go outside, take care of my garden, water my plants and harvest my vegetables…(some good, some not so good) has been the biggest treat for me!

I know my kids notice and see the change…when we eat, they’ll ask at times, “is this from our garden”….Oh JOY!

I am certainly not a garden expert, or a Martha Stewart…but the wonderful news is...Loni Brown, Horticulturist will be teaching a couple garden classes beginning mid April in our charming patio to all us gardener's in the making. She will share great information and also touch on composting. LOOK OUT FOR A POSTING OF HER CLASSES IN THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS.
My only suggestion would be to start small to not overwhelm yourself, try to get your kids involved with some part of the process….even if it’s just the watering! They will never forget!!!

I can't wait to tackle my garden this year...If you have any tips to share, any planting ideas...we'd love to hear about it!

Tell me a little bit about yourself.
I am a Graphic Design alumna from the Art Center College of Design. I worked for Wipf & Stock Publishers in Eugene, Oregon, designing high-end book covers and taught typography to the Design Team. Since moving back to South Pasadena, I freelance at my studio, designing bespoke fine stationery, logos, invitations, and announcements. I teach private classes, parties, and retreats (complete w/spa treatments, champagne, and cheesecake!) and hold seasonal Open Houses. What do you make and what is the process?
Whether it’s graphic design or greeting cards, my process is to LISTEN (to the client), THINK, and then DESIGN. I am uber-organized in all my work (a professional organizer on the side). I enjoy making “Green” greeting cards using recyclable materials such as cereal boxes, foraged materials like twigs & leaves, and quality card stock. This process involves tons of drawing, cutting, & pasting!

What inspires you to create?
Nature & music provide the beauty and that challenges me to interpret something new. The world is every creative’s oyster.

How do you see your craft evolving over the next year or two?
Through the evolution of my craft, I hope to get published and interviewed.

What is your favorite aspect of being an artist?
Observing. Analyzing. Instructing others how to make beautiful things. Seeing their amazement. I like demystifying techniques and making something out of nothing.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not creating?
Being with family and friends, enjoying great food. NEVER compromising quantity over quality. EVER. Going on retreats, photography, reading, interior decorating, gardening, organizing. Yep, organizing.

Are there any tips you would like to share for someone who wants to turn their "hobby" into a business?
Don’t do it at the expense of your family. Be judicious about how your hobby could “fit in” to your lives.
Any tips or suggestions on marketing yourself?
Put yourself into social situations (volunteering or working out at a gym) where you can meet people and develop friendships. Friends tell other friends, and word-of-mouth will help you move forward. Discipline yourself by tracking your time and expenses. Consult someone with marketing savvy. Use Etsy, Twitter, and establish a blog.

Anything you would like to share of interest?
Someday soon, I’d like to retire my husband for investing in my art school education (smile). My greeting cards are sold here at Belle’s Nest, at Lula Mae (Old Town Pasadena), Holy Family Church Bookstore, and soon in South Pasadena at Marz and Fair Oaks Pharmacy. I will be teaching a class here at Belle’s Nest on Sunday, April 25th from noon-2pm!

Artist Profile

Elyse Whittaker-Paek is an Australian born artist who spent her childhood in the
suburbs of Sydney. She moved to southern California with her family when she was in her senior year of high school.

During her education in the U.S. she became particularly interested in classical art and the human form. She then enrolled in the fine art and illustration program at California State University at Long Beach where she graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Art Illustration in 1994.

Soon after graduation and wanting to draw for a living, she was hired by Warner Brothers Animation Studio in the production of the feature length film, “Space Jam” which combined the Looney Toons cast with the althelete Michael Jordon. She continued her animation career with Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, California in the production of the television
series “Oswald the Octopus”, “Cat Dog” “Dora the Explorer,” and “Hey, Arnold.”

You can see within her work, glimpses of the world-renowned artist, Norman Lindsey. Like
Lindsey, you find within her work the female form in all its neo-classical natural beauty. But unlike Lindsey, she has been inspired by the fashion world of the mid 20th century and has now once again been inspired by the energy and independence of the punk-pop fashions of the 1980's.

Elyse currently resides in Sierra Madre with her husband and her two young boys. Who
inspired her to capture the beauty of Children in Portraits.

Wisteria Festival is coming!! It's on March 14th and thousands of people are expected to view the amazing Wisteria Vine which is in full bloom. I've lived in Sierra Madre 7 years and still haven't seen it! Sierra Madre is only about 10 square miles...really, I have no excuse.

Meanwhile, we are working on our patio...if I say so myself, it is sooo charming. I take absolutely no credit, Brenda is doing an amazing job! Scroll down and you'll read a bit about her.
We are transforming the store a bit to create space for the expected crowds, making room for new merchandise and having a good time remerchandising.

I don't mean cleaning your house, though I'm sure it's on our list...
Without sounding too much like a salesman, I find myself needing to promote the skin care lines we carry because I believe in their philosophy and the products are pretty fantastic! The products are made of organic, natural ingredients for all over body care. They smell wonderful, feel amazing and are handmade by individuals who care for the environment, ingredient content and you.

I've made it a point to try the lines...Chivas, Herban and Soaptart...there is something from each company that I love...I'm a customer for life.

Featured Artist

Our monthly featured artist began when we opened this February. The plan is to host a new artist every month giving them exposure and giving us something wonderful to look at and buy.
The artist for February is Cheryl Duboucheron. Her oil paintings will be showcased through this week, coming down on Sunday the 28th...it's not to be missed, her work is really beautiful.
To give you some background on this talented artist ~

Cheryl Duboucheron studied art at Otis Art Institute. She has been creating art for over thirty years doing mostly drawings, collages and sculptures. Seven years ago she started oil painting. Her favorite subject is the human face which expresses such diversity of expressions and emotions.

An other of her interest is flower painting, flowers showing a wide variety of shapes and colors.

The shape of Georgia O'Keeffe, Mary Cassett uses of intimate drama, the powerful emotions by Kathe Kollwitz and the rich impasto of Van Gogh and Wayne Thiebaud, among other artist works, are teh things that influence her work.

She is married and lives in Pasadena. She has two sons with wives and four adult step children with grandchildren.
